Camp Victory’s Nature Center is a dynamic environmental science facility that serves over 2,000 children, plus their teachers, counselors and volunteers annually. These children include:
•School field trips—predominantly elementary and middle school students who participate in the GEEC (Greenwood Environmental Education Center) Program. GEEC
•Special-needs campers—Camp Victory provides a welcoming experience for children with various physical challenges, and who attend one-week Spring/Summer camps.
•Private groups—Scouting groups, clubs and party groups have utilized the Nature Center to improve upon, and/or create unique experiences for members and guests.
The Nature Center includes an expansive classroom, complete with various specimens from the local area. The Greenwood Valley location allows access to a variety of habitats: agricultural, forest and wetlands. Fishing, boating, hiking and learning about local flora and fauna are major components of the Center’s programming.
Students conduct water testing at the creek, which is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and learn the importance of water. Students also learn topography and orienteering as they develop compass skills. They also dig in our pond and identify macroinvertebrates and the components of a food chain. There are also days when students create snake art or dissect owl pellets. And to round out the educational adventure, students can take the challenge and scale to the top of the camp’s climbing wall.
The Nature Center provides a hands-on, immersive experience where meaningful activities take place, enriching those who discover the beauty and intricacies of the environment.
